The juice concentrate, e.g. FCOJ (Frozen Concentrated Orange Juice), is typically made close to where the fruit is grown, and then shipped as a liquid commodity to the juice production facilities closer to the consumers. The delivered juice concentrate is stored in tanks and from there fed into a mixing container for further processing. Here, the juice is very precisely metered in, and diluted with water: other substances such as sugar solution and flavourings are also added. The sugar is first dissolved in water in a complex process in order to maintain a constant known sugar concentration and thus ensure consistent product quality. In the next step, the juice mixture is pasteurised by briefly heating it to 85 - 94°C using a heat exchanger. This reduces the number of germs still present, and prepares the juice for filling, as hot filling also ensures sterility.
In order to guarantee a consistently high quality of the juices produced, KROHNE offers perfectly tailored measuring devices that enable very precise control and monitoring of the process. Fast, extremely accurate and robust temperature sensors provide exact results for both simple and demanding hygienic applications. EGM™ technology by KROHNE (Entrained Gas Management) was developed for OPTIMASS Coriolis mass flowmeters to overcome problems caused by air or gas entrainments in a liquid. Powerful control algorithms allow the flowmeter to maintain operation over a wide range of gas fractions and complex flow conditions. FMCW radar level transmitters with a large selection of hygienic process connections enable reliable, continuous, non-contact tank contents and liquid level measurement. Capacitive level switches, with a short immersion depth into the process, provide high and low liquid level control or alarms, and are not affected by foam, condensate or deposits. Sterilisable and autoclavable pH sensors with integrated transmitters and high long-term stability can be connected directly to the process control system. All devices are EHEDG and 3-A certified and meet the requirements of FDA and EC1935 / 2004.
KROHNE Global Industry Division Food & Beverage
Headquartered in Duisburg, Germany, our Global Industry Division is dedicated to serving customers in the Food & Beverage industry. Being an instrumentation supplier in the industry for over 20 years, we have gained industry- and application-specific know-how that we implemented into our devices and measuring solutions. Our offering extends from elementary process instrumentation up to fully engineered systems, and from engineering consultancy during the design phase, through to on-site commissioning and training. With presence in around 100 countries, local support is usually available from just around the corner. This applies whether the application can be covered by standard instrumentation, or is more challenging, where a one-off solution with dedicated process diagnostics is required.
